The articles point to the recession as the underlying reason Americans are having fewer babies. But in Great Britain, as well as in many other countries, birth rates are increasing in very harsh economic conditions. The politics of race has entered a new phase.

I do see a very distinct link between this story and the apparent panic shown by Dick Armey's "Freedom Works" and William Kristol's PNAC group, the ultra right-wing Republican propaganda machines.

I think we first have to understand the birth rates of all the nations reporting data ...

Not so in Britain, where the population took its biggest jump in almost half a century last year and the fertility rate is at its highest level since 1973. France's birth rate also has been rising; Germany's birth rate is lower but rising as well.

"Our birth rate is still higher than the birth rate in many wealthy countries and we also have many immigrants entering the country. So we do not need to be worried yet about a birth dearth" that would crimp the nation's ability to take care of its growing elderly population, Cherlin said.

I can see how the Far Right Wing would panic over these statistics.

As the population is growing, USA birth rates are falling dramatically.
